William R. Orthwein Jr.
1917 - 2011

The Science Center expresses our sympathy to the family of William R. Orthwein Jr., who passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at his home in Clayton. He was 94. Mr. Orthwein was a Life Trustee of the Saint Louis Science Center, and, along with his wife Laura, was a strong supporter of the museum's mission. Perhaps most significantly through the Orthwein StarBay in the James S. McDonnell Planetarium. A testament to Orthwein's years at McDonnell Aircraft, the StarBay hosts thousands of people each year who learn about astronomy and aerospace through magnificent Star Shows. He will be missed greatly, but his impact on the St. Louis community and aerospace education will be felt for generations.
