Volunteer opportunities are available in a variety of areas throughout the Science Center. All positions require a one-year committment.
A pre-volunteer drug test is required by the Saint Louis Science Center's Drug -Free Workplace Policy. The test is performed at no cost to the applicant.
NOTE: If you are under the age of 18, please apply for our Junior Internship Program. Other volunteer opportunities for teens are being revised.
James S. McDonnell Planetarium
Volunteers play a wide variety of roles in support of activities and programs in the Skyport, on the Star Shuttle, Star Bay and Star Bridge.
Master Star Guide
Have you ever dreamed of operating a planetarium star projector? This 'Master' volunteer position requires 40 hours of training for someone who is very comfortable with public speaking to all ages and can present a friendly, positive and professional image at all times.
Master Pilot, Mission Control
This Master Pilot volunteer position will be responsible for operations in the Science Center's "Mission Control" room, overseeing up to eight flight simulators and helping our visitors experience the joy of "flying" their own airplane. This position requires 16 hours of training on Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 and Flight Simulator X.
Cyberville Gallery
Help visitors interact with and better understand new technologies in computers and telecommunications using the Internet, computer graphics, binary language and sensors. Volunteers provide exhibit interpretation and present tabletop activities.
Earth Sciences Gallery
Volunteers facilitate learning experiences in geology, paleontology, weather, erosion and recycling - engaging minds through hands-on activities, group programs and demonstrations.
Life Science Lab
As a volunteer in the Life Science Lab, you will have the opportunity to engage visitors around the Exploration Stations in our Atrium and present various topics on "Science on Wheels" activity carts. You'll get to help provide visitors with a fun and unique experience as they engage in authentic science at our Activity Benches. You'll also be able to help facilitate hands-on life science themed activities for private programs, events and the general public in our Lab Classroom.
Special Exhibitions
Temporary exhibitions come and go throughout the year. Volunteers assist in multiple ways to support them...taking tickets, giving information/good customer service and facilitating the experience with interpretation, hands-on activities and demonstrations.
Membership
Volunteers are an invaluable source because they help make sure Members' needs are met. Members make up the most - frequent visitors of the Saint Louis Science Center. Membership volunteers meet people from St. Louis and around the country, answering questions about Membership, the Science Center and completing sales of new and renewing Members. We prefer that Membership volunteers work at least once a week due to the demands of learning the variances in Membership and the POS system. Must have computer skills and sales experience is a plus.
Providing Member services on Saturday by answering phones. This volunteer will provide general SLSC film/Exhibition information; membership record checking; taking new or renewal membership information; taking messages as necessary for questions directed to other departments or staff.
Physical Sciences Gallery
Structures Gallery, Energizer machine, Do the Math and Amazing Science Demonstrations are in this broad and scattered territory. Volunteers can facailitate the visitor experience in one or more of these areas in many different ways. Check them out and ask for more information.
Discovery Room
This is an enclosed science gallery for our 3-8 year old visitors. Volunteers facilitate conceptual learning through constructive play using model dinosaurs, musical instruments, marble tracks, a race car track, live animals and more.
Visitor Services Greeter
We need one or two people each day to welcome our visitors in each of our lobbies. Volunteers should be able to describe the Science Center’s galleries and paid venues and be able to learn about Membership benefits. They should be able to assist with wheelchair and stroller rentals, help out in emergency situations and give clear directions around the building and other nearby locations. Volunteers will be expected to stand for long periods of time.
Segway Trainer
Training visitors to use a Segway is fun and challenging. You will be trained and assist another trainer with programs until you have developed the skills you need to become a lead. This position is perfect for someone who enjoys working with people both one-on-one and in small groups.
Amazing Nano Worlds!
Amazing Nano Worlds! is the new and exciting exhibition for the summer of 2012. This exhibition is designed to be enjoyed by families and is particularly intriguing, but not limited to, children from the ages of 3-13. This exhibit is designed to promote interaction with our visitors. We ask volunteers to encourage exploration, have an enthusiastic attitude and be comfortable working with children 3-13 years of age and standing long periods of time.
