The Saint. Louis Science Center's Flight! Gallery serves as a conduit between the Main Building and the James S. McDonnell Planetarium.
Throughout humankind's existence, we have longed to soar free from the forces that bind us to our planet. Entering the Flight! Gallery, you will see for yourself the many shapes and forms that the dream of manned flight has inspired - images that have populated our imagination over the course of centuries. Just beyond lies the Science Center's tribute to the Ansari X Prize, the $10 million award won by the revolutionary SpaceShipOne in October 2004. Explore the possibilities of affordable space travel, study the many ingenious designs inspired by the X Prize, and find out how much it would cost to launch you into orbit!
As you near the end of Flight! and approach the entrance to the McDonnell Planetarium, you will understand the physical forces that make powered flight possible. Finally, within the Planetarium's Holekamp Family SkyPort, examine a life-size replica of SpaceShipOne!
