Life Science Lab - Classroom
Opens October 2008

For School Groups:

It’s My Body—hands-on activities that investigate many interesting ways the human body works (grades K-2, one hour)

A Sense of Me—a program that explores the senses through investigation and hands-on activities (grades K-2, one hour)

Examining the Evidence—a forensics program where participants solve a murder mystery through examining fingerprints, shoeprints, hair samples and DNA patterns (grades 4-12, two hours)

Investigating Inheritance—a genetics program that takes an in-depth look at how DNA, genes and biotechnology help us understand the heredity of certain diseases (grades 6-12, two hours)
Gene Shorts—a basic investigation into the science of heredity and the applications of DNA research in everyday life.  Participants choose three activities from the list below (grades 4-12, one hour)  Topics of these investigations are listed below

Reebops: how are traits passed on from parents to children?

Check Yourself Out: examine several one-gene traits in humans

Cell Game: learn the basic parts of a cell and what they do

Create a Karyotype: find out what chromosomes can tell us about a person

Predicting with Pedigrees: construct a family pedigree and determine the probability of inheriting a specific trait

Looking at Cells: use a microscope to view a variety of plant, animal and human cells

DNA Disco: turn your group into a living model of DNA!

Paper Plasmids: see how a gene can be inserted into another organism

Gel Electrophoresis: analyze DNA and produce a genetic “fingerprint”

DNA Sequencing: translate a sequencer output into the genetic code for a trait

PCR Dash: how can scientists study DNA from very small amounts of sample

For Families:

Family Med School Basics - Come and spend a Saturday afternoon at the Saint Louis Science Center and have a wonderful time learning about the human body with your family! Graduate and medical students and researchers from the Washington University Medical School Young Scientist Program will provide hands-on “medical training” for you and your children, 5th grade and older. Learn about human anatomy and physiology, as well as diseases and ways to stay healthy.

Four Saturday sessions:

Heart & cardiovascular system
August 22, 2009

Lungs & respiratory system
September 26, 2009

Digestive system
October 24, 2009

Brain & nervous system
November 21, 2009

Space is limited to 40 participants per session, so reserve early!

Time:   1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Location: Life Science Lab, First Level

Family Med School Labs - a unique, complementary experience to Family Med School Basics in collaboration with Saint Louis University Adventures in Medicine and Science

For Brownies:

My Body Try-It—Brownies can earn a badge through a program that explains facts about the body and investigates many aspects of how the amazing body works (Brownie scout troops, one hour)

For Everyone:
  Lab Experiences
Discover DNA—learn more about the "molecule of life" with inheritance bracelets, performing DNA extractions and gel electrophoresis, making a model of DNA, and playing with pop beads and puzzles
Food Safety—discover how to be safe with the food you eat with Glo-Germ, mystery juice analysis, and milk explosions!
Pharmacy Phun—be a pharmacist by performing aspirin analyses, making medicine capsules, decoding prescriptions, counting pills, designing medicines, and being careful with medicines that look like candy
