The Saint Louis Science Center and The Magic House invite you to a free one-day workshop for museum and preschool educators! Please Join Us on Monday, March 3, 2014 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. We will spend the morning at the Science Center and the afternoon at the Magic House with time to explore and discuss programs for early learners at both locations. Registration by February 11, 2014 is required. Space is limited. The workshop, part of our IMLS Early Learners Collaborative, features: Bootheel Youth Museum, Malden, MO, sharing “Head Start to the Theater” which harnesses preschoolers’ natural star power and helps wallflowers bloom. Children learn confidence, teamwork, and memory skills. Discovery Center of Springfield, Springfield, MO, sharing hands-on, inquiry-based science programming for 4-year-olds called “Science Sprouts Outreach.” Childcare facilities that serve mainly low-income families are the primary recipients of the program, which also incorporates literacy. Koch Family Children’s Museum, Evansville, IN, sharing “Show and Tell, Touch, Taste and Smell,” a sensory learning experience for children ages 2-5. Participants explore the senses through hands-on play, dramatic play, textural games, scientific experiments, literature, animation, cooking, and sniff and tell activities. Scitech, Aurora, IL, sharing “SciTech STEM for Early Learners,” hands-on science experiments and activities offered both in the museum and their onsite preschool, especially focused on preschoolers ages 3-6.

Explore the mathematical complexities and wonders of pi at the Saint Louis Science Center, March 14-16. Themed demonstrations, make-and-take activities and table-top games will celebrate pi, a number that is an important part of all things round. Visitors will learn more about pi and how it is used in everyday life. The term π (Pi) refers to the ratio between a circle’s diameter and circumference. Simply stated, a circle’s circumference is π (approximately 3.14) times longer than its diameter. This concept holds true for circles of any size. Considered one of the more important mathematical concepts, π is important for many mathematical equations necessary in the areas of science and engineering. To honor the number, March 14 or 3/14 is known and celebrated as Pi Day.
