About

Lead the way and learn something new.

Teens are our future. Teen Science Cafés are free, 1.5 hour, hands-on programs that connect real scientists to high schoolers in the St. Louis Metro area. Featuring discussions and related activities such as game play, computer challenges, or experiments, these events are part of an international movement to bring free, informal discussions about science to the public.

Overview

Interact with real scientists.

The Saint Louis Science Center is part of the Gateway Teen Science Café node in the St. Louis area, which also includes the Academy of Science-St. Louis and Cahokia High School. Teen Science Cafés offer high schoolers a deeper appreciation of the importance of science to their daily lives and a desire to stay informed. Interacting with real scientists and science content can open teens to STEAM careers by giving them insight into the nature of science and the work of scientists.

Join the Youth Leadership Team to help plan cafés.

Any high school teen can apply for the Youth Leadership Team. Youth Leaders are expected to attend monthly planning meetings, help scientists to practice their talks, and make all of the decisions and preparations for the event – which they also run!

Some responsibilities include planning and running food and welcome tables, beginning the evening with welcoming remarks, introducing the presenter, leading the closing ceremony, cleaning up, advertising and recruiting. Adults are available for help and support, but members of the Youth Leadership Teams have every opportunity to run the show and take charge.’
