This pair of polished ammonites was found in the Pierre Shale region, a geologic formation dating to the Late Cretaceous epoch (approximately 100 to 66 million years ago) which occurs east of the Rocky Mountains in the Great Plains states. Ammonites are a type of extinct marine animal similar to nautilus, with a spiral shaped shell divided into chambers. They were once the most abundant animals of the ancient seas.
