Looking northwest around 9:30pm, you will find the famous asterism called the Big Dipper. Many in the northern hemisphere are taught to use this pattern to find the North Star. The end stars in the bowl of the dipper, Merak and Dubhe, point you to the North Star (also called Polaris).
