Today is the summer solstice. This is the longest day of the year and the official start of summer. At local noon, the sun will be at its highest altitude for the year. You can track this by measuring shadow length from a gnomon at local noon. As we head towards winter the shadows will grow longer due to the changing angles of sunlight hitting the gnomon.
