SUMMARY:PI Day
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Pi Day!\nThe mathematical constant “pi” (symbolized as the Greek letter π or the decimal 3.14) continues forever\, and the digits 3-1-4 hold lasting significance with St. Louisans as the hometown area code prefix. \n  \n\n  \n314 Day Celebration\nThe Science Center will spotlight the festivities by illuminating the dome of the James S. McDonnell Planetarium with the “314 Day” logo. The lighting will run from sundown to late evening on both Friday (March 13) and Saturday (March 14). \n  \n\n  \nPi Day\nThe Science Center’s Pi-themed celebration on March 14 (from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) spans across all galleries and will include hands-on activities\, demonstrations and experiments for those of all ages. Look for the π symbol around the facility and join us for: \n\nInteractive games at the Math Cart on the Lower Level.\nPizza and pie puzzles and a planetary lineup inside the James S. McDonnel Planetarium lobby\, with solar telescope viewing outside (weather permitting).\nAn explanation of cell function in the Life Science Classroom.\nA demonstration on Pi-ku (poetry consisting of 3\, 1 and 4 syllable lines) and mechanical drawing in MakerSpace.\nA demonstration on how pi is used in agriculture in GROW!\n\nIn addition to Pi-themed activities and free\, hands-on experiences around the Science Center\, guests may enjoy documentary films in the OMNIMAX Theater (Serengeti\, Secrets of Great Salt Lake and Deep Sky)\, virtual reality rides in the Experience Flight simulators and the Discovery Room for a nominal cost. \nABOUT PI:\nPi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference (distance around the outside of the circle) to its diameter (how wide a circle is) and is used determine a circle’s area or a sphere’s volume. Because the exact value of pi cannot be calculated — the decimals defining pi have no end and no repeating pattern — it’s considered an irrational number and is a favorite of mathematicians. It has uses in geometry\, physics\, astronomy\, architecture\, construction and other STEM fields. \n \n\n \nDo you have an insatible appetite for Pi? Learn more about Pi in our blog post! \n\nLet’s hear it for Pi!
