Special Presentation: “Revealing the Practice of Tattooing in Ancient Egypt” with Dr. Anne Austin, University of Missouri-St. Louis

The practice of tattooing in ancient Egypt was rarely studied until recently. Egyptologists only identified tattoos on only a handful of mummies from Pharaonic Egypt’s 3,000-year history. In 2014, Dr. Anne Austin and the Institut Français d’Archéologie Orientale (IFAO) in Egypt identified an extensively tattooed female mummy. The distribution, display, and content of these tattoos reveal how they were used both in religious practice and to form identities. Since then, we’ve discovered that this woman was not alone. This presentation shares evidence on the practice of tattooing in ancient Egypt.
