BEE MANOR, 2016
A wide variety of insect pollinators exist. Four thousand species of bees are native to North America alone. The pollinator’s symbiotic relationship with flowering plants has evolved over time since the vast majority of all plants require pollination to reproduce. In a rapidly changing environment, pollinators face complex circumstances that threaten their health and habitat. Over the past decade, insect pollinator populations have been declining at an alarming rate. Degradation and loss of habitat, pesticide misuse and pests all contribute to the steady decline in bee populations. Bees and other pollinators are invaluable to our ecosystem. Their pollination efforts support the majority of flowering plants and over a third of the food we eat.
The Native Bee Condos were inspired by insect architecture and are meant to provide a nesting site for tunnel-dwelling insects, including bees.
About The Artist – Michelle K. Rogers’ artistic practice merges the fields of art, science and culture. Her larger project, Apiary and Melipona Investigations, is the synthesis of years of research into the world of bees and their relationship to humans throughout history. Michelle has been involved in several conservation and research efforts. She worked at the University of Florida’s Honeybee Research and Extension Laboratory (HBREL) on the native bee project Operation Pollinator.
