Ancient Caves

About

Ancient Caves brings science and adventure together as it follows paleoclimatologist Dr. Gina Moseley on a mission to unlock the secrets of the Earth’s climate in the most unlikely of places: caves. Until recently, scientists had no reliable way to accurately study the climate of Earth’s distant past. Moseley and her team of cave explorers travel the world exploring vast underground worlds in search of stalagmite samples – geologic “fingerprints” – that reveal clues about the planet’s climate history.  Their quest leads them to some of the world’s most remote caves, both above and below the water, in France, Iceland, the Bahamas, the U.S. and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, where they study how rapidly Earth’s climate can change, and how it has affected human civilization.  Together, they go where very few humans will ever go, revealing the incredible lengths scientists will go to study the unknown.

Ancient Caves is an Oceanic Research Group Films production produced with support from the Giant Dome Theater Consortium and presented by MacGillivray Freeman Films.

    • She and an expert team of cave divers voyage to the world’s most remote and stunning caves to retrieve stalagmites–geologic”fingerprints”–that provide information to help us better understand climate patterns today. The film is the perfect mix of science and adventure, and audiences are loving it!
  • Scientists and Divers’ quests in Ancient Caves lead them to some of the world’s most remote caves, both above and below the water, in France, Iceland, the Bahamas, the U.S., and Mexico’sYucatan Peninsula. The caves were a natural choice for the film not only because of their beauty but because they are the perfect depth for retrieving samples that can tell us about sea level changes in the past, an indicator that scientists hope can lead to new insight into climate change.
  • The film took home top honors at the GSCA 2022 Film Awards including Best Film, Best Cinematography, and Best Film for Lifelong Learning.

Educator’s Guide

The Educator Guide for Ancient Caves was created by Bill Andrake for use by formal and informal educators looking to inspire their upper elementary, middle school and high school students. Activities are envisioned to live alongside the film and support further exploration of major themes. They are designed around the U.S. Next Generation Science Standards, but educators are encouraged to adjust them to best fit the standards or programming needs of their school board. Much of the chemistry presented in this investigation focuses on chemical change at the molecular level, addressed in middle school and high school science curricula. However, the activities and lessons can be adapted for upper elementary students who may lack background knowledge of the particulate nature of matter. In “Exploring the Chemistry of Caves,” students have the opportunity to learn the chemistry behind the cave
formations.
