Secrets of the Universe

About

Travel with scientist Manuel Calderon De La Barca Sanchez as he journeys to the largest machine ever built, the greatest scientific instrument ever created, the large hadron collider (LHC). There, he joins a global team working to uncover another amazing breakthrough in this new world of technology-driven physics. We get an inside look at the machine and come to understand just what it means to do science, teaming up for the flag of humanity to solve the universe’s greatest mysteries.

Secrets of the Universe is a sweeping, giant-screen adventure that immerses audiences in the greatest mysteries of our time and introduces the brilliant minds seeking to unravel them. Those answers await at the collision points of intellect and imagination, of theory and experiment, of the tiniest particles and most powerful forces in the universe.

Look Farther into Secrets of the Universe

Secrets of the Universe is the proud winner of the Best Visual Effects Award from the Canadian Diversity Film Festival – CDFF, the Best Science Film Award at GeekFest Toronto, and the Best Physics Movie by the Vienna Science Film Festival!

Dr.  Manuel Calderón de la Barca Sánchez (an explorer & lead character in the film) and his team smash the nuclei of two atoms into one another at super high energies (trillions of electronvolts each), forming tiny fireballs that act as recreations of the Universe right after the Big Bang.

Director, Stephen Low, is one of the most experienced filmmakers in the large format medium and brings to his work a unique storytelling vision that continues to win audiences and awards around the world.

Film Features

  • James Webb Space Telescope’s (JWST)
    • Bigger than a tennis court and three stories tall, it’s reflecting surface is seven times larger than Hubble’s, and is fine-tuned to infrared light.
    • The amount of gold on the JWST mirror, if melted down, would be the size of a golf ball.
  • The Perimeter Institute
    • Working to advance our understanding of physical laws and develop new ideas about the very essence of space, time, matter, and information.
  • The Large Hadron Collider
    • A particle collider, passes under the border between France and Switzerland four times over its 26.7 km circumference.
    • It counts as the world’s largest fridge. The magnets in the tunnel are cooled to a frosty −271.3°C (1.9 K).
    • Here, they tackle some of the most fundamental mysteries in science, joining forces with 10,000 scientists from 50 countries.
  • Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO)
    • The arms of the LIGO detector are huge – 4 km each – they are made to detect unbelievably tiny changes caused by gravitational waves.
    • In Secrets of the Universe, scientists travel to the LIGO – an amazing project that recently confirmed Einstein’s century old prediction of the existence of gravitational waves.

Educator’s Guide

This K–12 Educator’s Guide includes activities and information to help extend the learning
experience after students watch Secrets of the Universe. The film explores cutting-edge
science experiments taking place around the world, including at the Large Hadron Collider
at CERN and the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO). This guide
includes hands-on activities that share the process of science with your students.

Learning Goals for K–12 Students

  • Science is a creative and collaborative endeavor of thinking deeply,
asking questions, finding patterns and building models.
  • An understanding of nature at the smallest scales is needed to
understand how the universe behaves at the largest scales.
  • Technology extends human senses, allowing us to observe the universe
    at different scales.
