Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey arrives in theatres July 2026, delivering this year’s most ambitious cinematic event, crafted for The IMAX Experience®. In a collaboration that has redefined modern filmmaking, The Odyssey marks Nolan’s seventh film shot with IMAX Film Cameras, continuing the groundbreaking creative partnership that began with The Dark Knight (2008).
Following seven Academy Award® wins – including Best Director – for the record-breaking Oppenheimer, Nolan returns with a film of epic proportions. Inspired by the timeless literary masterpiece, The Odyssey is brought to life with visceral realism, breathtaking scale and uncompromising immersive storytelling that can only be fully realized in IMAX.
The Odyssey is the first-ever feature film shot entirely with IMAX Film Cameras, the highest-resolution cameras in the world. This historic achievement as made possible through a fleet of newly-developed IMAX Film Cameras, the first built in more than 25 years. Developed in close collaboration with Christopher Nolan and his longtime cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, the IMAX Film Cameras were created alongside a newly engineered camera enclosure, the “blimp”, which van Hoytema called “the most essential piece of equipment on this production”. This breakthrough enables dialogue scenes to be captured with synchronized sound on IMAX film at scale for the first time.

- IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond revealed that Sir Christopher Nolan uses never-before-seen IMAX technology in this film.
- “No IMAX cameras were harmed during the production of this film”. A joke from Christopher Nolan: “I did not destroy an IMAX camera on this film. I have destroyed several in my time, but these ones survived The Odyssey.” Each IMAX camera costs approximately $500,000, and at least 3 have been destroyed on Nolan’s films.
- Matt Damon grew a real beard for playing Odysseus at the request of Sir Christopher Nolan. He wanted facial hair on Damon’s face that could withstand wind and water. Damon claimed it was a slight challenge since he had never grown out a full beard before.
- The Odyssey used 2.1 million feet of film, longer than the distance from Toronto to New York.

OMNIMAX Theater films take place in the OMNIMAX Theater on the second floor of the main 5050 Oakland building. Access is available through the main entrance, then the stairs in the main lobby to the second floor.
