Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in IMAX® theatres on May 22, 2026, bringing a fan favorite in the Star Wars universe to the biggest screen. Directed by long-time IMAX collaborator Jon Favreau, the film continues the epic journey of Din Djarin and Grogu, expanding their story into a cinematic event designed for The IMAX Experience®.
Marking a historic milestone for the franchise, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is the first Star Wars film to be Filmed For IMAX®. As part of the program, Favreau collaborated closely with IMAX, from early demos and camera tests at its LA headquarters to using virtual reality to review IMAX footage both during shooting and in post production, fully leveraging IMAX’s technology throughout the process.
Shot with IMAX-certified digital cameras, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu features 53 minutes of IMAX’s exclusive 1.90:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio, strategically used to immerse audiences in the film’s most pivotal moments, from galaxy-spanning battles, to Grogu’s unforgettable, scene-stealing moments. Select IMAX with Laser locations will present these scenes in IMAX’s towering 1.43:1 aspect ratio, delivering the largest image area possible for audiences.

- Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu was Filmed For IMAX®. From camera tests before the shoot began all the way through post-production, Director Jon Favreau collaborated closely with IMAX throughout the filmmaking process to craft a film that fully utilizes the scale, clarity, and immersion of the IMAX technology.
- The first Star Wars film shot entirely in California. The production received a $21.8 million tax credit, one of the largest ever awarded by the state.
- This was originally meant to be Season 4 of The Mandalorian (2019) but Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni decided to rework it into a film during the SAG-AFTRA strikes.
- This movie marks for Sigourney Weaver her fourth Sci-Fi franchise where she appears. Previously she starred in the sagas of Alien, Ghostbusters and Avatar.
