Makerspace is an interactive community-oriented space where you can create and learn skills using a variety of tools and materials. Use your own creativity as you explore science, technology and engineering principles! Develop your maker mindset as you play, build, imagine, adapt, modify, work together and have fun.

This exhibit is free.

Makerspace is designed for ages 7 and up. Best for multi-generational groups!

Introduction to the Knitting World

In this workshop, we will be learning the basics of knitting by making a Cardboard Roll Snake.  Join us to make your very own cardboard tube loom and get started on your journey with knitting.  You will be able to take the loom and yarn with you to continue your exploration after your visit at the Saint Louis Science Center.

Yarn Art

In this workshop, we will be learning the basics of knitting by making a Cardboard Roll Snake.  Join us to make your very own cardboard tube loom and get started on your journey with knitting.  You will be able to take the loom and yarn with you to continue your exploration after your visit at the Saint Louis Science Center.

When visiting the Makerspace, take a look at our Maker Shelves for exciting projects we’ve done in the building! You can take part in our monthly sessions and learn something new about being a maker.

Can’t get enough after you leave? Want to keep the creativity going at home? Check out online projects for fun, hands-on ideas! Each project has step-by-step video and tutorials to help you explore making, tinkering, and inventing on your own. Whatever you are interested in, these videos are a great way to bring the Makerspace experience to your home.

Bring in your personal projects and they may be featured in the gallery!

Makerspace Activities

Come draw specimens from the Science Center’s collection items and test your skill as an observational artist.

Check out the unique materials for our Float and Fly experience. Experiment with different weights and parachute styles to catch some major air!

Build crazy contraptions and material literacy as you engineer vehicles, tools, or your very own invention.

Rigamajig

This life-sized building set has been a main stay in the Makerspace since 2015. This tried and true toy provides children with a means to explore STEM principles through open ended play. Enjoy creating from one of our changing prompts or go off the rails and create something totally unique!

The Science Center is a proud play partner of Rigamajig, whose building sets featured in our Makerspace spark STEM learning, creativity, confidence, collaboration and problem-solving skills.
