March + April 2026

We’re back again with another update on the upgrade project within the James S. McDonnell Planetarium. These new updates come after 25+ years with the reliable technology of the ZEISS UNIVERSARIUM Mark IX which provided stellar Star Shows, Laser Shows and many other forms of fun and educational opportunities for guests of all ages. With time, new advancements in planetarium technology have enabled us to upgrade and soon become the largest and most advanced hybrid planetarium in the United States via the GOTO Chiron III Hybrid Star Projector and Cosm Digistar Full-Dome Data Visualization System.

Since our last update, contractors have installed a newly designed carpet featuring zodiac constellations from across the night sky. On their next visit, guests will be able to sit at their favorite constellations beneath the dome. In total, over 5,000 square feet of carpet beneath the 80-foot-diameter dome were removed in just a few days, with installation completed just as efficiently.

Next came the delivery of the sound system mounts and speakers. The new audio set-up will pair impeccably with the incredible detail of the new projection technology. It will also enhance any panels, films, documentaries and other STEM-related programming. The possibilities with this new technology are almost endless.

Then came the installation of the plinth that will serve as the support for the GOTO Chiron III projection instrument and Digistar systems. Due to the high precision of the new projection system, the plinth was designed to minimize any flex or vibration to ensure the highest degree of projection quality from the Chiron III and Digistar.

Following the Chiron’s arrival this week, the Science Center exhibits team—working alongside outside experts—began the meticulous process of assembling and installing the system. Exact precision during installation is critical to a seamless guest experience, with exact placement beneath the dome ensuring clear, optimal views from every seat.

  • Mid-April/May: the Cosm Digistar Full-Dome Data Visualization System is shipped.
  • Continued calibration and hybridization of the GOTO Chiron III star projector”
  • Entryway redesign for improved flow and functionality.
  • Planetarium educators begin developing new live shows that will be performed later this year.
  • Summer 2026: grand re-opening of McDonnell Planetarium Shows!
