ABOUT

Secrets of the Sea takes audiences face-to-face with an astonishing array of marine critters and shows the fascinating ways they interact with each other and their environment. From pygmy seahorses and opalescent squid to giant manta rays, tiger sharks, barnacle blennies, a coconut octopus, and much more, Secrets of the Sea demonstrates the critical importance of marine biodiversity to keeping our oceans healthy, showing how so many of the ocean’s animals depend on one another for survival.

Narrated by Joelle Carter, Secrets of the Sea is the latest underwater giant screen documentary from internationally acclaimed filmmakers Howard and Michele Hall, following their previous blockbuster ocean hits Into the Deep, Island of the Sharks, Deep Sea 3D and Under the Sea 3D, which combined have grossed more than $250 million at the worldwide box office. For Secrets of the Sea, the Halls partnered with award-winning filmmaker Jonathan Bird, whose giant screen film Ancient Caves was released to critical acclaim in 2020 and who is the producer and host of the Emmy® Award-winning series Jonathan Bird’s Blue World.

Secrets of the Sea introduces audiences to a new cast of strange and wondrous sea creatures and marine life that reveal just how truly magnificent and extraordinary the ocean world really is,” said director and producer Howard and Michele Hall. “Viewers will discover animal behaviors that have only rarely been photographed before, such as the unique way dugongs and remoras interact with one another and the spawning rituals of squid and parrotfish.”

RATING: G – General Audiences
RUNTIME: Approx. 45 minutes.

Secrets of the Sea features more than 70 different marine species and is jam packed with spectacular visuals and unique and fascinating animal behaviors,” said director Jonathan Bird. “Families and kids will love seeing all the animals, from tiny krill to giant blue whales, and will marvel at how so much of the ocean’s sea life works together symbiotically with one another.”

Secrets of the Sea was filmed in 16 locations around the world–from Tahiti to Mexico to the Philippines to California—and includes the same spectacular underwater cinematography that fans of the Halls and Bird have come to expect. A stunning visual celebration of marine life with an inspiring message about protecting our oceans, Secrets of the Sea also features a powerful score from renowned giant screen film composer Alan Williams.

Secrets of the Sea is a MacGillivray Freeman Films presentation of a Howard Hall Productions and Oceanic Research Group production. The film is family-friendly!

ACTIVITY GUIDE

Welcome to the Activity Guide for Secrets of the Sea.

As ocean filmmakers, we have spent more than 30
years diving to explore our amazing seas. While we
have seen some dramatic acts of predation, what
we have observed more often are communities of
organisms that live together and that are mutually
dependent on each other, helping each other survive
and thrive. In our documentary film Secrets of the
Sea, produced for IMAX ® and giant screen theaters,
we share some of these stories of incredible mutual
partnerships—from cleaning stations where fish eat
the parasites off of other organisms, to shrimp that
build burrows to share with other fish. With this
Activity Guide, learners of all ages can explore these
relationships in more detail through interactive and
fun activities.

We hope that as you learn even more about these
amazing communities, you’ll work to help protect
our ocean. And perhaps some of our younger
viewers will be inspired to explore the 80% of our
ocean that is still unexplored, as future marine
biologists, oceanographers or even filmmakers when
they grow up.

Enjoy these activities at home, school or in youth
groups. Keep diving deeper and appreciating
communities—on land and in the water.
