EXPERIENCE SOUND

Science Center Up Late returns with a new installment: Experience Sound! From music to nature, this event will explore the science and technology behind sound and music. Featuring a range of experiences throughout the entire Science Center campus! Scientists, musicians, and engineers will be on hand to discuss all things sound and you can enjoy countless of other hands-on activities.

Unique cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages and snacks will be available for purchase at our cafe, second floor loft outside of the OMNIMAXยฎ Theater, and throughout the building.

COST: $20, non-members, $15 members
AGES: 21+ Adults Only, valid ID required
TIME: 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Weโ€™re rewinding the tape and bringing back Science Center Up Late: Experience Sound! The popular 21+ event returns this July 25 for an encore presentation sure to get a standing ovation!

Weโ€™ll feature classic hits like Silent Disco with our T. rex, our incredible Energy Stage shows, and a hands-on Makerspace activity. Weโ€™ll also bring in some new players to take things to the next level. New highlights include:

FIRST FLOOR

  • Smells Like a Sound โ€“ Join Aurelia Aromatica to explore the hidden relationship between perfume and sound through an immersive scent experience inspired by musical composition.
  • Killer Queen Tournaments KQSTL โ€“ Our local Killer Queen league is here to teach you everything you need to know about this competitive 5-on-5 arcade game. Check out a tournament and hear the sounds of victory!

GROW

  • Shortyโ€™s Beer Garden with Schlafly โ€“ Our brewery partner is bringing their new mid-strength line of full-flavored beers aimed at moderation, to help you beat the summer heat in our outdoor GROW gallery.
  • Audio Outside โ€“ Local A/V and HiFi specialists at Audio Advice are showing off just how good outdoor music can sound!
  • Taiko Workshops โ€“ Osuwa Taiko, a local Japanese percussion group, will teach you the ins and outs of this ancient music form.
  • Sounds of St. Louis โ€“ Our partners from Dekka Guitars will show off how they build their incredible stringed instruments. Weโ€™ll also feature amplifiers from local company Magnatone!
  • Science Overheard โ€“ Get hands-on with sound science in a new opportunity weโ€™re calling Be A Kid Again!

LOWER LEVEL

  • Audio Immersion byย SnapPro AVย โ€“ Step into an immersive audio experience byย SnapPro AV, featuringย Meyer Sound,ย and explore the evolution of sound design in film, cinema, and live concert environments. This experience will include a special presentation byย Bob McCarthyย on immersive audio design, cinematic sound, and concert scale audio experiences.
  • The Dawn of Stereophonic Sound โ€“ย Look and listen to some of the finest early home stereo equipment, including vacuum tube Marantz and speakers promoted by Miles Davis himself! Learn how we experience dimensionality in sound, and how two channels of music combine into one record groove!

  • This Rocks! โ€“ All the materials inside speakers, amplifiers, and digital music players have to come from somewhere. Westminster College will share some of the geological origins of common components!
  • Silent Disco โ€“ Dance the night away alongside our famous T. Rex with our live DJ from Glo Event Co.
  • Energy Stage Shows โ€“ Our talented team at Energy Stage are turning the volume knob up to 11 on our regular shows featuring sound and music!
  • Cocktail Classes โ€“ Learn how to make some perfect cocktails featuring liquor from partner J. Rieger Distillery & Co.

SECOND FLOOR

  • Trivia with the Academy of Science – St. Louis – Step into the offices of our in-house partners, the Academy of Science. Have fun with their carefully curated trivia rounds!
  • Take-Home Harmonicas โ€“ Our Makerspace team knows everyone needs a good souvenir! Make and take a โ€œsandwich harmonicaโ€ for when youโ€™re missing the Experience Sound vibe!
  • Experience Sound! โ€“ The Science Center has put together some incredible exhibits that will help our guests visualize sound.
  • Mobb at the MAX โ€“ Modular Mobb is back, this time under the dome of our famous OMNIMAX theater. Featuring live music creation and stunning visualization, youโ€™ll be blown away by this first-of-its-kind experience!
  • Sound Lounge โ€“ With local partners Audio Advice and HiFi company SVS, weโ€™re creating a mini sound lounge near our Loft concession stand. Check out how good high-end equipment can sound!

PLANETARIUM

  • Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar โ€“ Itโ€™s back! Mix and mingle with our friendly scientists and ask โ€˜em a question. Whatโ€™s your favorite Star Wars ship? Whoโ€™d win in a fist-fight between Kirk or Riker? Howโ€™d you get into frogs, anyway? Ask away!
  • Experience Surround โ€“ Audio Advice and partner SVS are putting together an incredible audio visual experience in our Experience Flight room. Drop in on your way to the Planetarium!
  • Ballet and the Planetsย โ€“ย Ballet 314ย will be bringing a very special intermission to our regular Planetarium programming as they perform pieces from the classical workย The Planetsย by Gustav Holst!

Science Center Up Late: The Saint Louis Science Center is THE place to be for STEM learning opportunities in our region. We know the Science Center is thought of as a fun place for kids, and while that is true, with this new adult series, we are putting the grownups first!
