The Romans had a long history of making statuary in bronze, and thousands of images of gods and heroes, victorious athletes, statesmen, philosophers, and sacred animals filled ancient temples and homes. The material lent prestige and beauty to objects like these statuettes, most of which would have been dedicated to the gods.
