The Andromeda Galaxy is a spiral galaxy like the Milky Way. This galaxy is 2½ million light years away which means the light we see from this galaxy is 2½ million years old. This galaxy can be seen through binoculars in the constellation Andromeda.

The sky tells us that fall is almost here. Looking to the east around 9 pm you will see 4 stars that form a square that are associated with autumn. This is the Great Square of Pegasus.

Shortly after midnight, Saturn’s moon Titan will cast its shadow on the cloud tops of Saturn. These events are called shadow transits which are only visible on Saturn when it is near an equinox. Moderate-sized telescopes are required to see this event. Two more Titan shadow transits occur this year and then we have to wait for Saturn’s next equinox in 15 years.

If you look east after midnight, you will see a V-shape of stars. Most of the stars in this group are members of the Hyades star cluster in the constellation Taurus.

On this date in 1977 the Voyager 1 spacecraft was launched from the Kennedy Space Center. Voyager carries a recording of Earth sounds, which includes Chuck Berry’s hit, “Johnny B. Goode”.

Looking northeast tonight after midnight you will find a bright yellow star called Capella. This is the brightest star in the constellation Auriga.

Full moon for September occurs today which is the 9th full moon of the year. You can find the Moon rising in the east as the Sun is setting. Not long after Moon rises Saturn will follow suit. Saturn will be its brightest this month as it approaches opposition in September 21, 2025.
