Where can I grow plants in the winter? Our GROW team has many ways to keep our plants growing in these cold months! In the pavilion, our tower garden is brimming with a wide variety of plants from bok choy to rainbow swiss chard. This low maintenance option is ideal for winter indoor growth. The GROW Lab is also teeming with plants. This state-of-the-art hydroponic growing space is full of tomatoes and peppers. These peppers are the second generation of the pepper breeding project that GROW scientists are conducting. Two types of peppers were crossed together, and then those seeds were grown for another generation. Numerous Science Center pepper-geeks taste tested the peppers to decide which were the best tasting and the seeds of those peppers will be grown out for another generation. Some of those plants might even be crossed with a new, different variety of pepper to make them spicier!

GROW’s aquaponic greenhouse is also well utilized this time of year. Broccoli is growing in the first front bed, while the NFT (nutrient film technique) and floating raft are full of tasty lettuce. The aquaponics system is overflowing with kale and calendula, an edible flower. Be sure to come and check out this warm space amidst the winter chill.

The GROW team is hard at work planning and preparing for spring planting in the next couple of months. We are excited for our gallery to be lush and full of plants for our guests soon!
