Romans were skilled metalsmiths, crafting a diverse array of objects including jewelry, coins, tools, weaponry, furniture, sculpture, lamps, and other household items. They favored bronze over all other metals for their finest work, as evident by these detailed lamps. Bronze oil lamps were luxury items made for the wealthy and are among some of the rarest artifacts to come from the Roman Empire.

  1. Bronze Lamp with Cross Shaped Handle, Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium), ca. 500-800 CE
  2. Reproduction of Bronze Double Spout Hanging Lamp, original made in Serbia, ca. 1st century CE
  3. Bronze Double Spout Lamp with a Dragon Handle, Italy, 3rd to 4th century CE
