Fall is an exciting time around GROW as we welcome featured additions and returning favorites! In mid-October, we are happy to debut a new exhibit: Grow Your Own Way! Discover the important aspects of growing plants in any available space. Learn about which soil to use, what seeds to plant, when to plant, and how to protect your garden from pests. Feel free to roam and explore the exhibit and chat with our GROW staff so you can Grow Your Own Way!
Then enjoy a shaded stroll under our bumper crop of Luffa! This unique summer squash (Luffa aegyptiaca) stretches its massive vines across the pathway trellises. Young luffas have a mild taste and crunchy texture, but mature luffas are tough and fibrous. Instead of eating them, we dry, peel, and de-seed our luffas to turn them into natural sponges!
We are celebrating our flock of chickens’ 1st birthday this October! Over the course of their lives they have adapted to their new home in GROW, learned where to eat and drink, how to go inside their coop at night, and interacted with our many guests. They started laying eggs in the spring, when they were about five months old. One of the breeds, the Cream Legbar, lays olive green eggs! As the seasons change, our chickens begin to molt, losing their feathers as new ones grow in. They can look pretty funny while this process is happening but do not worry! This is a normal and healthy process for them to go through.
