On this date in 1894, Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev was born.  He would become the leader of the Soviet Union from 1956 to 1964. While in power, Khrushchev focused on policies advancing rocket development. He also gave his personal support and approval for the Sputnik satellite, which launched on October 4, 1957.
