What is Unearth Day?

In the world of paleontology, August 12, 1990 was a groundbreaking day! On this day, fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson found a small section (around 2 inches) of bone sticking out of the cliff side near South Dakota’s Cheyenne River. For 17 days, a team of six people carefully extracted the bones from the rock. This led her to unearth what would become the world’s most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex with nearly 90% of its bone uncovered. That T. rex was aptly nicknamed SUE.

Ferns & Dinosaurs

Dr. Li-Bing Zhang, the Herbarium Curator at the Missouri Botanical Garden, talks to you about ferns and dinosaurs!

Did you know ferns are one of the oldest groups of plants on Earth? The oldest fossil dates back to the Devonian Age, a few million years before dinosaurs like SUE roamed the Earth. Unlike flowering plants, which reproduce via seeds, ferns reproduce via spores and do not have flowers or seeds.
