Tonight at 11 pm it is possible to see the Moon and Jupiter close together in the eastern sky. With a telescope, it will be possible to see the shadows of Jupiter’s moons Ganymede and Io passing across the atmosphere of the gas giant. This double transit will begin at approximately 11 pm and last until 12:40 am tomorrow morning. This is the second double transit of these moons this month; however, the first was not visible from St. Louis.

The eastern sky as it will appear tonight at 11 pm. The Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn will be visible in the east-southeastern sky. A double transit of Ganymede and Io will be visible from 10:59 pm to 12:40 am. It will be possible to see the shadows of both moons crossing the upper atmosphere of Jupiter, as shown in the bottom right image. Star map created using Stellarium
