Today the Moon reaches its descending node. This is when the Moon starts to appear south of Earth’s ecliptic. If new or full moon occurs at the descending node, we see an eclipse. If it is new moon, a solar eclipse occurs and if at full moon, a lunar eclipse occurs. The next solar eclipse visible from St. Louis, Missouri is a partial solar eclipse on October 14, 2023. Other parts of the Americas will see an annular eclipse that day.

The red line in this image indicates the path of the annular solar eclipse in October 2023. Locations within the blue lines, but outside of the red path will only experience a partial solar eclipse. Image credit: NASA GSFC/Fred Espenak
