Tonight at 10 pm, the bright star Deneb is visible over the northeastern horizon. Deneb comes from the Arabic word for “tail” and represents the tail feathers of Cygnus the Swan. Deneb appears very bright in our sky; however, it is one of the most distant stars you can see with the naked eye at approximately 1,500 lightyears away. We are able to see this star so well because it is extremely large and bright. Deneb is approximately 200 times the size of our own sun.

The northeastern sky as it will appear tonight at 10 pm. At this time, the constellation of Cygnus the Swan will have just risen over the east-northeastern horizon. Deneb is the brightest star in the constellation. Star map created using Stellarium.
