Tonight at about 9 pm, the Moon reaches perigee – the closest point from Earth in its orbit. At this point, the moon is approximately 225,449 miles (362,826 km) away. Although the moon is closer than its average distance of 238,900 miles (384,472 km), the visual difference is minimal, and often cannot be detected with the naked eye. Additionally, the moon is only a few days into its cycle and will appear as a thin crescent.

The Moon as it will appear tonight at 9 pm; however, at that time the Moon will be below the horizon. To observe the Moon tonight, look west just after sunset which occurs at 4:42 pm. The Moon will be quite difficult to see as it is such a thin crescent and appears very close to the Sun in the sky. Image credit: NASA SVS
