Those getting into star gazing should get familiar with Universal Time (UT) as most astronomical events will be posted in UT. To convert to local St. Louis time, we are 5 hours behind UT during Daylight Saving Time and 6 hours behind when it is Daylight Standard Time. For example, a lunar occultation of Mars occurs at 3:05 UT December 8, 2022. However, St. Louis time the occultation starts at 9:05 pm CST on December 7, 2022.

The relative positioning of the Moon and Mars at 9:05 pm on December 7, 2022. At this point the Moon will begin to occult, or cover, the disk of Mars in the sky. Star map created using Stellarium
