The Celtic tradition Samhain is the basis for the modern tradition of Halloween. Astronomically, Samhain occurred when the Pleiades star cluster was visible overhead at midnight. If you go outside tonight at midnight, you will find the Pleiades just about overhead. Due to precession, the timing has shifted but it is still similar to what the Celts experienced.
The sky as it will appear at midnight tonight. Although the Pleiades are not directly overhead, they can be found high in the southeastern sky. Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn can also be found throughout the sky. Star map created using Stellarium
