Tonight you will find the Moon near the bright planet Jupiter. The Moon was the only moon we knew about until Galileo pointed a telescope at Jupiter observing the moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.

The sky as it will appear tonight at 10 pm. The Moon and Jupiter can be found high in the southeastern sky. With a pair of binoculars, some of the Galilean moons of Jupiter can be seen. The image at the bottom shows the positions of these moons at 10 pm tonight. Europa is passing in front of Jupiter (dark circle indicates Europa’s shadow). Io is passing behind Jupiter at this time.
