Experience it in IMAX®

About

Director Rob Marshall embraced IMAX technology and pushed the boundaries of filmmaking to provide moviegoers with a truly remarkable immersive experience.

“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

Film Facts

  • Halle Bailey as Ariel: Bailey is best known as one half of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, who rose to fame after being discovered by Beyoncé on YouTube. She also stars in the TV series Grown-ish. Bailey was chosen by director Rob Marshall for her “rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice.”
  • The Little Mermaid live-action remake will feature all the classic songs from the original 1989 animated film, composed by Alan Menken and written by Howard Ashman.
  • The Little Mermaid live-action remake will stay faithful to the story and spirit of the original animated film, but will also update some aspects to make it more relevant and diverse for modern audiences.
  • Lizzo auditioned for the role of Ursula, going so far as to even dress as the character in a social media post, but ultimately didn’t get the part.
  • The film updates the original lyrics to some of the songs to include consent and female empowerment, such as in the song “Kiss The Girl.”
  • Four new songs were written by Menken and Miranda for the upcoming film, due to hit our screens on 25 May 2023, but only three of these have made it into the remake.
