Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Vinyl Record – 1983

May 25, 2023 marks the 40th anniversary for the release of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. What better way to celebrate than with a look back at the story of Star Wars on vinyl? With dialogue featuring the voices of the cast, music, and photos from the original motion picture, fans could experience the story again at home before it was released on VHS and LaserDisc in 1986.

Although Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi released in theaters on May 25, 1983, it was not available for fans to watch at home until three years later. In February of 1986, the film was released on VHS, Betamax, LaserDisc, CED VideoDisc, and V2000 tape cassettes. Fans would have to wait until 1990 for all three Star Wars films to be released in a complete trilogy boxset on VHS. Star Wars Trilogy: The Definitive Collection was a home release of the films in LaserDisc format which came out in 1993, and included a sixteen-page booklet with production notes from the films, as well as a hardcover book, George Lucas: The Creative Impulse, which documented the first twenty years of Lucasfilm Ltd. The last pre-Special Edition release of the trilogy on VHS was in June of 1995, and had THX digitally remastered audio and video.
