About Superhuman Body The Film

From the wild rush of your bloodstream to the sudden firing of your nerve endings to the rocksteady drumbeat of your heart, your body is engaged in an astonishingly complex, unseen symphony of life-giving interactions every second of every day. When it works well, the human body is simply astonishing. But when it faces a crisis, the body’s ability to heal, to resiliently bounce back, and work in harmony with cleverly conceived technology, is among the world’s great wonders.

Now comes the story of how, when up against the toughest odds or pushed to extremes, the human body—but also the mind and spirit—so often triumph in inspirational ways. The body’s uncanny knack for overcoming adversity, and the determination of scientists, doctors, and engineers to make that a reality for more people, is celebrated in visually mesmerizing form in MacGillivray Freeman Film’s (MFF) Superhuman Body: World of Medical Marvels, narrated by Academy Award® winner Matthew McConnaughey and presented by Edwards Lifesciences and Griffin Catalyst.

Via a powerful mix of state-of-the-art CGI and the thrilling immediacy of the IMAX® experience, the film whisks audiences off on an “insider’s tour” through the body’s hidden workings and into the electrifying world of high-tech medical advances changing how humans survive and thrive. Even as it peers into the universe beneath the skin, the film also heads into the vast outdoors as surfers, climbers, and divers share stirring personal stories of meeting health challenges head-on.

At once action-packed and scientifically rigorous, Superhuman Body also proves to be one of MFF’s most emotional, hope-filled journeys yet—reveling not only in the body’s astounding capabilities but in the profound yearning of the human soul to always become better and give more.

In Superhuman Body, the body shares the spotlight with the marvels of human ingenuity, perseverance, tenacity, and renewal. A climber undergoes a pioneering heart valve operation, then shows his gratitude by helping others receive sight-restoring surgeries around the world. A brave teenager plunges into the ocean with whale sharks, a long-time dream achieved only because she was the first child to receive the revolutionary CAR T-cell therapy for leukemia, saving her life. An adaptive surfer contemplates what human strength and grit really mean as he masters the balance of wakesurfing for the very first time. A trailblazing robotics engineer brings the skills she used on NASA’s Mars Rover to design friendly, humanoid machines that will help patients recover faster.

Meet some of the stars of the film

‭These inspiring individuals and scientists play important roles and inspire us through the film Superhuman Body. Learn more about them and their background!

‭Dr. Ayanna Howard

‭Dr. Ayanna Howard‬‭ is a pioneering roboticist, innovator,‬ ‭entrepreneur, and international expert in human-computer‬ ‭relationships. She is the first woman Dean of the College of‬ ‭Engineering at The Ohio State University where she focuses on ‭designing robots that can teach, encourage and rehabilitate‬ ‭humans. Her accomplishments have been highlighted in‬ ‭publications like‬‭ Time ‬‭magazine, and ‬‭Forbes ‬‭named ‬‭Dr. Howard to‬ ‭its America’s Top 50 Women in Tech list.‬

Hugh Herr

‭Stranded in a blizzard while rock climbing, a young‬‭ Hugh Herr‬‭ lost‬ ‭both legs below the knee, and soon began shaping prosthetics ‭that could enable him to climb again. He turned his tragedy into‬ ‭an amazing career. He first earned a master’s degree in‬ ‭mechanical engineering at MIT, then a PhD in biophysics from‬ ‭Harvard University. Today he co-leads the Yang Center for Bionics‬ ‭at MIT, where he‬‭ has revolutionized the field of biomechatronics‬ ‭and has inspired millions with his positive influence and outlook‬ ‭on the future of adaptive limbs.‬‭You can find his‬‭ TEDTalks and‬ ‭appearances on news and in documentaries on the internet.

‭James Garrett

‭James Garrett‬‭ is a retired flight nurse and accomplished rock‬ ‭climber who volunteers his time training medical staff around the‬ ‭world to perform sight-restoring cataract surgeries. When he‬ ‭learned he had heart disease, he chose a revolutionary,‬ ‭non-invasive procedure called Transcathater Aortic Valve‬ ‭Replacement over open-heart surgery. It saved his life, and within‬ ‭days, he was rock climbing in Utah again.‬

Educators Guide

Lessons for Grades K-12

The Superhuman Body: World of Medical Marvels Educator Guide was created by the Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin Science Center (formerly Carnegie Science Center) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in partnership with MacGillivray Freeman Films.

This guide features lessons most appropriate for students in the following grade bands: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. The guide is most useful when used as a companion to the film but is also valuable as a resource on its own. Activities developed for this guide support the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Educators are strongly encouraged to adapt activities included in this guide to support specific state or national
standards and the needs of their students. This guide focuses on the amazing biology of the human body and how scientific discoveries and advances in engineering play a role in helping each of us live our best life.

All lesson plans and activities are designed for student inquiry, with communication and teamwork interwoven throughout. Lessons challenge students to learn through observation, engineering, testing and iterating ideas, and formulating conclusions based on data collection.
